1996:  BA (Hons) Accounting – 2.1 at University of Ulster, Jordanstown.

1997 Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting – Pass, at Queens University Belfast.

November 1999 Passed Final Admitting Examination of Chartered Accountants Ireland.

February 2011: Admitted as FCA to Chartered Accountants Ireland.


Background

  • I started my training with a small firm in Newry after recieving my Postgraduate Diploma from Queens University where I sucessfully passed my final exams and qualified as a Chartered Accountant.  After working with that firm for a few years post qualification, I moved into industry to work as the Financial Controller of a small food production company, Take 'N' Bake Limited.  After a period of two years in this role I moved back into practice as a business Consultant with FPM in April 2006 and since then I have been promoted within to Director and have assumed various roles in the firm.
  • I am an active member of Crossmaglen Ranges GAC with whom I have enjoyed success as both Player and Management at All Ireland level and In the past I have been involved with my local youth club as a member of the committee and also as a mentor.


Other Positions

  • In recent years I have been actively involved in my local GAA club's development as a member of the committee, and have served as mentor/manager both at underage and senior levels.
  • I currently represent the firm as a member of the Crossmaglen and South Armagh Chamber of Commerce and Trade.

Relevant Experience

Consultancy:
  • Provision of guidance to various organisations starting up, preparing Business Plans, grant applications and setting up management controls
  • Preparation of bank proposals for organisations looking to expand operations.
  • Prepartation of detailed Financial Projections and analysis for various purposes.
  • Provision of advice on business process improvements.
  • Appraisal of funding applications to various public bodies.
  

Audit & Accounts Preparation

  • Audit Supervisor/Manager on a range of assignments where responsibilities included planning, budgeting and co-ordination of the audit work, in addition to the supervision of the audit team. These assignments were carried out in the following areas:
    • Building Contractors;
    • Construction Industry
    • Farmers;
    • Fuel Distributors / Electrical Distributors
    • Manufacturing;
    • Motor Dealers
    • Nursing homes;
    • Retail;
    • Wholesale and Distribution.
  •  Preparation of statutory financial statements for small and audit exempt companies.

Industry Experience

  • As Financial Controller of a small food manufacturing company, my duties included:
    • Preparation of both UK 
    • VAT compliance reporting in both Northern Ireland 
    • Preparation of monthly management accounts.
    • Preparation of a 3 month rolling budget.
    • Development and maintenance of the costing system
    • Credit control and Cashflow management.
    • Capital Investment appraisal.
    • Preparation of Branch Accounts.
    • Preparation of Annual Financial Statements.
    • Responsible for the maintenance and running of the company’s computer systems.
    • Provision of various other ad hoc financial information.
  • I was also involved in the day to day running of the business from Stock control to production decisions.  I developed most of the management controls in place in the company from the costing system to the stock system and incorporated the costing system into the budgeting process and management account production, being able to accurately reconcile costings to accounts to budgets and highlight and explain variances.


Taxation:

  • Extensive Knowledge in the preparation of personal, partnership and corporate tax returns.
  • Advising clients on income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax matters.
  • Experience in handling HM Revenue and Customs investigations into client affairs.
  • Assisting on VAT and PAYE related issues.

 

MIS:

  • Provide Assistance to clients on Company Secretarial matters.
  • Development of IT skills and gaining an extensive knowledge of packages such as Works, Excel, Sage Winforecast and Sage Taxation and accounts production packages
  • I have also been recieved accreditation from SAGE on Sage Accounts 50 and Sage Payroll.
  • Provision of training in computerised systems and general accounting procedures.
  • Assistance in reviewing and improving financial and management controls to businesses to efficiently manage their business.
  • Review and assessment of different accounting systems and their ability to meet specific needs.
  • Extraction and analysis of SAGE data into excel to produce management accounts on a monthly basis, complete with ratio and variance analysis.
  • Advice to clients on otpimum set up of computerised system for compliance and management purposes, specialising in SAGE Line 50 Accounting systems as an accredited Sage Partner.
