The Don Patterson Open Juvenile Golf Competition 2009 held at Warrenpoint Golf Club on Thursday 13 August 2009 was acclaimed as a fantastic success by all involved.  The competition which was sponsored by FPM Chartered Accountants with offices in Newry, Belfast, Dungannon and Dundalk was fortunate to enjoy glorious weather and attracted upwards of 140 competitors from across the Island of Ireland.  The quality of the golf as reflected in the results was exceptional. 

 

The boys Under-13 competition which was played over the first 9 holes was won by Eoghan Collins, Laytown & Bettystown with a score of 38 strokes.  The Girls U-13 competition which was played over the back 9 holes was won by Rose McAuliffe from Dublin.

 

The boys Under-11 competition which was played over the back 9 holes was won by local Warrenpoint golfer  Michael McGurk with a gross score of 38 strokes. Eleanor Metcalfe from Laytown, Bettystown with 49 strokes, retained the girls U-11 title which was played over the back nine holes.

 

The boys Under-9 competition which was played over the opening 6 holes was won by Peter Taylor from Tandragee with a score of 33 strokes.  The girls Under-9 competition which was played over 6 holes commencing on the 10th tee was won by Rebekah Moorhead from Tandragee with 48 strokes.

 

A new Putting Competition was introduced this year and the winners of the various categories were:

 

U-13    Eoghan Collins (Laytown & Bettystown)

U-11    Dale Baker (Downpatrick)

U-9      Odhran Maguire (Slieve Russell)

 

Tadhg Lynch from Newry Golf Academy, aged 5 years won the Don Patterson Special Prize (selected by Don).  Runner up prize in the Don Patterson special prize section was presented to Brendan Lawlor from Louth Village. 

 

Parallel to the Golf Competitions, Junior Golf Ireland supported by golf coaches Kevin McGivern and Nigel Shaw provided free golf coaching sessions.

 

Don Patterson, the Lady Captain of Warrenpoint Golf Club Mrs. Joan Pollock and Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council John Feenan presented prizes at the competition and were fulsome in their praise of the organisation of the event and the competitors who travelled from all over Ireland to compete and the sponsors of the event FPM Chartered Accountants.

 

Each competitor participating in the competition received a signed Certificate from Don Patterson.

 

Feargal McCormack Managing Partner, FPM Chartered Accountant sponsors of the competition expressed his sincere thanks to Warrenpoint Golf Club, the many voluntary Stewarts who helped out and in particular all the competitors, their Parents and Juvenile Convenors who made the event such a memorable day.  FPM’s Senior Partner Paddy Harty acted as Master of Ceremonies.
